Course name: Spanish 2 H
Teacher: Mrs. Guerra-Batt

Learning a different language is a very important asset in your life, and Spanish is a great choice; so many people speak it! Here are a few reasons why:

*It will enable you to keep pace with Hispanic influence on culture (It can only get stronger)
*It is actually medical advice! By learning and using two languages, the chances of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease are reduced because bilingualism enhances mental abilities.
* Business necessity (getting a job, selling your product)
* Help others.
* Make your travel experience MUCH better, and not limited to the tourist experience.
* You will without a doubt gain a better understanding of English and expand your vocabulary.
* It will allow you to better appreciate the Hispanic culture.

Course description:
Spanish 2 Honors introduces students of above average ability who have had success in middle school Spanish or in Spanish 1. The course challenges these students to progress further toward proficiency in speaking, listening, and writing skills. Application of grammar and vocabulary is expanded. Self-expression is emphasized through written compositions and oral presentations. Reading consists of short, authentic selections that stress cultural aspects of the Hispanic world. This class will be conducted mostly in Spanish. Interested students will prepare for the National Spanish Exam. There is a required summer assignment for this course.

Grading:
Following the departmental guidelines, grading is as follows:
-Quizzes and tests and any other form of assessment are 60% of each quarter.
-Class participation, including classwork, disposition, and effort, are 20%.
-Homework conforms the remaining 20% .
-Midyear and Final Exams are 20% of the second and fourth quarters, respectively.

Materials needed:
-Our text book is En Español 2. You will have access to a copy in the classroom.
-A binder to hold packets and notes (it can be shared with other subjects if it is not a conflict).  If you’re unable to buy/obtain a binder, please inform me to make sure you get one.
-Writing utensils of your preference, except red ink.

Basic rules:
Maintaining a positive and safe environment is key for everyone to be able to maximize their learning experience, and your participation in this is needed; we will ALL take part contributing to the best of our abilities for this to happen.
-Students are expected to be in class on time, seated, and with materials (including writing utensils J) and disposition ready to start the class. In the event that you arrive late, you must have a pass excusing you for being late.
-Paying attention, not distracting others, raising your hand, waiting for your turn, using classroom appropriate volume, not talking over my voice or those of other students, asking permission to use the restroom at appropriate times, and other basic rules are expected to be followed at all times.
-Respect everyone in every aspect.
-If you disagree with something I or somebody else says or does in the classroom, or the decisions I take, we can talk about it after school or at different moment other than during class; do not try to engage me or other students in arguments. Be respectful of the safety and learning of your classmates.
-Negative behavior will not be tolerated and if the offense persists, you will be asked to stay for detention to talk about the issue and try to find a solution. If the behavior continues, the intervention of your Dean will be requested.
-Remember that insubordination is not tolerated in Quincy High School.

Homework/assignments:
Some assignments are simple and are due at the end of the period or the next class, especially homework. Other assignments require more work and are due on the day set in class. You are expected to complete every homework assignment. Only work that is turned in on time will receive full credit, unless other arrangements are made with me. When a student is absent from my class, it is the student’s responsibility to be in contact me or the school to find out if there are any assignments due upon arrival and/or make arrangements to complete them in a timely fashion. The same expectation applies to quizzes and tests, keeping in mind that other factors need to be considered (quizzes are frequent, it is important to keep up with them).
In the event of not completing homework consistently, I will ask you to stay after school to complete the assignment to ensure that its purpose is fulfilled.

Electronic devices policy:
It is NOT allowed to use any electronic device without my consent. There will be times when I will invite you to use it. In case of an important matter, your family/guardian can try to reach you at a different time or contact the main office.

Communication
There are several channels available to contact me and keep track of most of the assignments:
- I strongly encourage the use of ASPEN.
- My website, mmrcdsguerra.com , where you can find the google calendar that corresponds to your class. Most of the assignments are posted there the same day they are assigned in class (you can also and sign up for notifications).
- E-mail: mariaguerra@quincypublicschools.com    OR     mmrcdsguerra@gmail.com   (for sharing through google apps)
- I also use Remind texts (please see website to join) occasionally.
